The British Geological Survey said on Wednesday that the tremor, which lasted for more than a minute, was centred in Cumbria.

A Cumbrian property once lived in by the poet William Wordsworth has been damaged by fire.

The National Trust  said in a statement: "There was a fire at Allen Bank in Grasmere last night and we are pleased to report none of the tenants were injured.

It broke out in the roof and first floor of Allan Bank in Grasmere, in the early hours. At its height, five appliances were at the scene.

Tenants of the National Trust property, which is not open to the public, escaped uninjured.

"We are helping them with regard temporary re-housing, this may be with relatives or other arrangements. 

"We do not yet know the cause of the fire and, of course, will await the fire officers' reports in due course. 

"We are, of course, concerned about any fire in a historic building and will be assessing the damage as soon as we are assured it is safe to do so."

The British Geological Survey said on Wednesday that the tremor, which lasted for more than a minute, was centred in Cumbria.

Police said there have so far been no reports of major damage or injuries after the tremor hit at 11pm on Tuesday 22nd December 2010.

Peter Kelly, owner of the Yewdale Hotel in Coniston, is reported to have said residents heard a bang and a rumbling sound.

Alan Robertson, who runs a hotel in Eskdale, is reported to have said the tremor was "sizeable enough to shake an old and well-established building".

Geologists advise that Britain experiences a small earthquake every 12 to 18 months.
