A Birmingham bomb disposal expert is to be posthumously awarded the George Medal for his courage in defusing 100 explosive devices during a five-month tour of Afghanistan.

Staff Sgt Brett Linley, aged 29, from Bournville, will be named on the list of honours for personnel killed in the Afghan conflict.

Brett Linley’s parents, George and Anne, received an acknowledgement letter from Major General SA Burley MBE. 

It read:

“I write now to acknowledge the award of a George Medal to Brett in the recent Operational Honours List.

This rare award is in respect of his actions on the day he lost his life, and on many previous occasions.

His professional approach to disarming improvised explosive devices was always conscious and considered, showing repeated courageousness and valour of the highest order.

It is right that a grateful nation should honour him in such a manner.

We shall never forget him.”
